Hair consists of keratin arranged in different structures that make up the hair strand. These spiral structures, also known as alpha-keratin helices, are individual keratin fibers connected by three types of bonds. These are disulfide, ionic, and hydrogen bonds. Disulfide bonds are strong and very difficult to break, but they are not enough to maintain the strength of the spiral structure. The other two types—ionic and hydrogen—are numerous but easily broken by environmental factors or through chemical and thermal hair treatments. When these bonds are broken, the hair loses its structural stability and, consequently, its strength.
